Hullo, Thank you for investigating! If you've already had a flick through my portfolio you will have seen that I work in a wide range of styles, genre and medium. I enjoy taking the observational and compositional drawing skills I have developed over years of study and practice and applying them to create work for my clients, my various communities and for my own enjoyment. I really enjoy transforming a clients stick-figure concepts and art brief into multipurpose images that go on to inspire and engage their audience. There is a definite magic in taking an empty page and a vague idea and making it have form. My formal arts education includes a Bachelor degree and PhD in Natural History Illustration, with my PhD exegesis "The Hunter Rubá'iyát: Illustrating Edward FitzGerald's Rubá'iyát of Omar Khayyám" was completed in 2015 and consists of two four-and-a-half metre long Japanese-style handscrolls and five woodcut prints designs. The illustrations and the accompanying exegesis which may be found HERE in the University of Newcastle's thesis database. My illustration practice is additionally informed by past study in Parks and Wildlife Management, volunteer experience with zoological, botanical, agricultural and educational institutions in Australia, America and Ireland. I keep stretching my existing skills through scheduled biweekly morning practice sessions which I livestream, sharing tips, discoveries, process and, troubleshooting mistakes as they occur. You can find me on Twitch most Wednesday and Friday mornings (NSW AEDT/AEST 7-8.30 via the purple coment logo in the main menu) I teach foundational drawing & painting workshops through the Museum of Art & Culture Yapang, and other Lake Macquarie Council community hubs, the Newcastle Printmakers Workshop, and on occasion my own program of botanical drawing at the Hunter Wetland Centre. In 2021 I created a trial run of small notepads for personal and patron use which has evolved into 20+ designs stocked at 5+ creative or environmental institutions and I have many more ideas percolating. While I'm enthusiastic about all forms of wildlife I have a particular fondness for microbats and prioritise promoting positive education regarding these and other traditionally reviled species that are an intrinsic part of the ecosystem. |
